Otterbox, A company who is known as a popular innovator of cases for the Apple iPhone 4 smart phone, has many models which it touts. Of the multiple different lines of cases in which OtterBox peddles, we would like to cover the OtterBox Commuter series. Thus, here is our OtterBox Commuter review for the iPhone 4.
In the duration of our OtterBox Commuter review of the case the first thing we studied was the material. The commuter casing is fashioned from a non-slip plastic accurately referred to as 'polycarbonate', followed with a layer of durable silicon in its mid layers. For those who are not familiar with the term 'Polycarbonate', Polycarbonate is a toughened plastic on steroids. While it is useful in many applications, it is known for having uses in more popular items such as bullet proof glass or the CD. OtterBox obviously isn't trying to protect your iPhone from epic amounts of hail of gunfire, otherwise they are missing the market and YOU SHOULDN'T be buying iPhone cases, but possibly acquiring into life insurance....All jokes aside, there is a reasoning for such strong material. Polycarbonate is known as a very hard plastic with literally no weight, perfect for a iphone. It is also known to be almost unbreakable, making it a reasonable choice.
So adding Polycarbonate with your prized iphone is an amazing way to make sure no damage comes to your apple iphone. 1 not so great thing however in regards to this material is while it offers above average protective quality to your iPhone, this material is a lot more expensive than that of its rivals, acrylic and glass. If you had not already guessed, this is bad because it is applied in the retail price, which we personally would think is high for a case. Another thing to think about though is you are buying quality when you pay for Otterbox, not garbage, so like anything else you should expect a higher price. This was the first thing we covered during our OtterBox Commuter review.
The 2nd thing we reviewed during our OtterBox Commuter review was the fit of its casing. Similar to other OtterBox products for individuals who have tried the more popular 'Defender Series', this case does have that 'bulkiness' to it. It pails in comparison to its older brother, 'The Defender' however it is big none the less. Truly, this is one of those 'cases' where 'size doesn't matter'. Are we right ladies? OK, bad joke, we know. Anyway, the Commuter does an outstanding job of securing the whole iphone, leaving openings for all access ports and allowing easy access to those sections by folding back when needed. The iPhone is protected on the inside due to the silicon which is securely applied once properly fitted, to absorb shock damage should the phone get slammed or dropped.
The case is extremely tight and does not slip even remotely once installed successfully, a big plus in our humble opinion. On the flip side, the phone can feel quite rough on your ear for long calls should you be the more sensitive type. Nothing big though. The usual OtterBox circle for Apple's logo on the back remains sadly, not everyone likes representing the Apple logo even though we bought an iPhone 4. As for the fit, installation, and feel of this phone, we felt it was above average. In the future however, we hope they work on making it a tad more comfortable for your ear in future releases. Next time we do another OtterBox Commuter review, we hope they will have improved on this.
Reflecting back, if we had to judge this case in numbers during our OtterBox Commuter Review, we would give it a 7.5/10. It is a good case and pretty much a more up to date and manageable 'Defender' style case. Really what it boils down to is your use for for it. For example, If you are a construction worker, in all probability your iphone is going to see various un-usual punishment. While the Commuter would do fine we think, you may want to look into upgrading into a 'Defender' case. The 'Defender' series is everything short of a military grade TANK for your iphone , but you will be carrying a brick around with you. For everybody else, the Commuter works. In conclusion, we hope you enjoyed our OtterBox Commuter review. We consider it to be some of the best protection for iphone 4.
